Tuy không phải lần đầu đến Úc, nhưng đây là lần đầu tiên tôi đến Bắc Úc, nơi đồn đại có xung đột giữa thổ dân và khách nước ngoài. Tôi không có xe hơi, chưa có bằng lái và còn bỡ ngỡ với cuộc sống ở đây. Nhất là lúc tìm cách gọi Uber từ sân bay về nhà thuê, thẻ tín dụng VCB của tôi bị từ chối thanh toán. Tôi loay hoay cài đặt ứng dụng Uber và xác thực, mất tận 30 phút mới có tài xế đến đón.

Tài xế là một anh người Ấn Độ, có mùi hôi khó chịu. Xe Uber ở đây phần lớn là xe Sedan, không quá cũ như taxi ở Việt Nam, nhưng do chở nhiều người, nội thất xuống cấp và rất có mùi. Đường phố vắng tanh không một bóng người, đèn đường cao tốc sáng, nhưng vào các đường nhỏ thì tối om như ở quê, khiến tôi cảm thấy lo lắng.

Tôi tin rằng nhiều người Việt Nam khi đến Darwin lần đầu sẽ có những cảm nhận tương tự. Nhưng cuộc sống mà, sống càng lâu thì sẽ hiểu và thích nghi được. Dần dần mọi thứ sẽ trở nên thuận tiện hơn.

Tuy nhiên, với các bạn sinh viên, người Việt Nam mới qua hoặc ông, bà, bố mẹ qua thăm con cháu thì nhất định sẽ có nhiều bỡ ngỡ và đôi khi là khó khăn. Từ đó, tôi nhận ra rằng cần có một giải pháp để giúp đỡ những người mới đến Darwin giống như tôi.

I, Hoàng Cường, currently living and working in Darwin, NT, in the Northern Territory of Australia, would like to share with you a truly touching story about my first experiences upon arriving here.

One midnight, after a long journey with a layover in Bali, I set foot in Darwin. Although it was not my first time in Australia, it was my first time in the Northern Territory, where conflicts between indigenous people and foreigners are rumored to occur. I didn't have a car, didn't have a driver's license, and was still struggling with life here. Especially when trying to call an Uber from the airport to my rented house, my VCB credit card was declined. It took me 30 minutes to install the Uber app and verify my account before a driver finally arrived to pick me up.

The driver was an Indian man with an unpleasant smell. Most Uber cars here are sedans, not as old as taxis in Vietnam, but due to carrying many passengers, the interior is worn and quite smelly. The streets were deserted with no one in sight, the highway lights were bright, but the small streets were as dark as in the countryside, making me feel worried.

I believe many Vietnamese people arriving in Darwin for the first time will have similar feelings. But life goes on, and the longer we live, the more we understand and adapt. Gradually, everything becomes more convenient.

However, for students, newly arrived Vietnamese people, or parents and grandparents visiting their children and grandchildren, there will undoubtedly be many surprises and sometimes difficulties. From there, I realized that a solution was needed to help newcomers to Darwin like myself.
